Director of Christian Education
Stella manages our children’s ministry, choosing curriculum, organizing baptisms and confirmation, and recruiting the many volunteers it takes each Sunday to provide quality Christian Education for more than 400 children (ages birth to 18) growing up at St. Michael’s.
A member of the Daughters of the King, Stella is dedicated to Christian service. She has three young adult children.
Ann and her husband Jim have called Raleigh home for 20 years. Ann, who is both hospitable and wildly creative, is always coming up with something new as she produces bulletins, brochures and special event mailings for the parish. The Gareys have two sons.
When she’s not behind her computer at St. Michael’s, Ann enjoys traveling, skiing, playing tennis and attending music concerts. She and her family are members of Christ Church.
Director of Development
Charlotte Griffin joined the staff in the spring of 2013 after 20 years as a parishioner. She supports the Holy Michael Foundation and our Annual Fund campaign. Charlotte brings her wealth of experience as a former member of the Vestry and senior warden and Annual Fund chair. She has served on our Personnel and Operations committees, the Parish Day School board, the Gathering and numerous other groups at St. Michael’s. Notably, she was instrumental in the formation of the foundation during her time on the Vestry, and she has witnessed first hand the Annual Fund and Stewardship ministries develop over the past 11 years. She has also served within the diocese on the Transition Committee for the Bishop Suffragan election, and as a delegate to convention.
Charlotte, a Raleigh native, loves Pilates, reading, sports and spending time with family and friends. Charlotte and her husband, Rob, have three young adult sons who were raised at St. Michael’s.
Assistant Director of Children's Ministry
Carolyn came to St. Michael''s in 1992 as a teacher assistant in the Parish Day School, and since that time she has taught every age of preschoolers who attend. For eight years, she has been the lead teacher in the transitional kindergarten, and in 2014 joined Stella Attaway in our growing Children's Ministry program. Carolyn, who has her masters in early childhood education, has one grown daughter. She enjoys reading, and walking, and traveling around the world with her daughter, who is flight attendant.
Lee C. Hayden
Director of Operations & Newcomer Ministry
Lee joined our staff as Director of Newcomer Ministry in April, 2008. In September 2012, her job transformed into Director of Operations and Newcomer Ministry. Lee’s quick wit, kind heart, and meticulous organizational skills make her a natural for both newcomer ministry and facilities management.
Lee and husband David have lived in Raleigh for 10+ years. Lee, a Fayetteville, native, spent many years as a public school teacher, then became managing principal of her family’s insurance agency. Raised Southern Baptist, Lee joined the Episcopal Church 18 years ago.
The Haydens have four children and can often be found in Raleigh’s wonderful restaurants enjoying terrific meals and great conversation with family and friends. Lee enjoys sports, hikes, reading a good book and art.
Director of Church Music
A native of Pennsylvania, Kevin has been organist and choirmaster at St. Michael’s since 1998. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Church Music and a Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting, both from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ. At St. Michael’s, he conducts choirs for adults, youth and boys, and is supported by a staff of gifted children’s choir leaders.
Kevin conducts the Schola Cantorum of the Diocese of East Carolina, an auditioned choir with the mission of singing Choral Evensong throughout the eastern portion of the state. He is also the chapel organist of St. Mary’s School. Kevin is on the board of the Royal School of Church Music in America, and a member of the Association of Anglican Musicians and the American Guild of Organists. He lives near downtown Raleigh, and is the proud owner of a happy little dog (Chihuahua/Terrier mix) named Taylor.
For almost 25 years, Susan has made sure St. Michael’s finances run smoothly. A graduate of Meredith College, she has served under three of St. Michael’s four rectors and has a wealth of institutional knowledge about our parish.
Susan and her husband Jeff have two grown children (and spouses) and two grandchildren. They also have Maddox and Millie, two Springer Spaniels who love to visit St. Michael’s. The Littles love the Wolfpack and to vacate at North Myrtle Beach when they can.
Jean is the point person for everything from the Sunday announcements and weddings, to baptisms and pastoral care. She grew up in Jacksonville, Fla., and moved to Raleigh in 1987 with her husband and three young children. In 1994 she went to work part-time as parish administrator at St. Timothy’s, where she learned the various aspects of church administration and duties. She has been our parish secretary for 17 years.
Jean loves her three grown children, her three dogs and one cat, and Elvis. In her spare time Jean likes to read, do needlework and bowl.
Director of Communications
A longtime parishioner, Susan brings more than 30 years as a professional writer and editor to our team. An author of two books of non-fiction, she is currently a Sunday columnist for the News & Observer. A member of Episcopal Communicators — a national organization of professional communicators who work for the Episcopal Church — she is responsible for our monthly flagship publication, The Chronicles of Canterbury, holymichael.org, and other publications. She also teaches a Sunday morning class on writing and faith.
Susan loves writing, cooking, traveling, making yeast rolls and taking photographs. She sometimes sails aboard the Fortune's Fool, with her husband, Rick. They have two grown children who were raised at St. Michael’s and a mixed up lab who hates the water.
Abby Van Noppen
Director of Youth Ministry
Abby joined our team in February 2014 after helping direct the Y Guides program for the YMCA of the Triangle. A lifelong Episcopalian, Abby brings with her a wealth of experience working with children and teens. She has also served as Health and Wellness director for the Chapel Hill YMCA and as assistant director of Campus Recreation for Elon University. She and her husband, Chance, are the parents of an active toddler, Maggie.
Jesus has many roles at St. Michael’s. He can be found trimming the hedges and mowing the lawn, but look for him running the dishwasher on busy days. Jesus came to the United States from Veracruz, Mexico, and began working at St. Michael’s in 2005. He has a sister and a brother also living here. Jesus was born on Christmas Day.
Marcela de la Cruz
Marcela keeps our buildings pristine, she also can be found in the garden. She and Jesus have a pretty daughter, Angela, 14, who sings in the Canterbury Choir. Marcela also came from Veracruz and began working at St. Michael’s in 2005.
